The Effectiveness of Colloidal Thorium Dioxide as an Internal Alpha Emitter: A Combined Morphologic and Radioautographic Study ‡
نویسندگان
چکیده
The hazard of ionizing radiation from internally administered colloidal thorium dioxide (Thorotrast) has been a subject of controversy even since this medium was first employed in clinical roentgenology. Reports of neoplasia as well as diffuse hepatic fibrosis occurring in patients following Thorotrast administration have been summarized and evaluated by Thomas et al.7 Although intravenous injection of colloidal thorium dioxide introduces a highly potent source of intense alpha radiation into certain tissues of the body, a combined histologic and radioautographic study clearly indicates that the tissues are exposed to but a fraction of the total ionization dosage and that most of the radiation energy is dissipated within the thorium deposits themselves.

Comparison of (Th-233U) O2 and (Th-235U) O2 fuel burn up into a thermal research reactor using MCNPX 2.6 code
Background: Decrease of economically accessible uranium resources motivates consideration of breeding of fertile elements such as thorium. Material and Method: Thorium oxide fuel burn up calculation of a simulated research reactor cooled heavy water has been proposed in the present work using MCNPX 2.6 code. Two 233U and 235U isotopes have been used as fissile element of thorium oxide fuel. 135...
متن کاملUptake of Colloidal Thorium Dioxide by Mast Cells
Mast cells from the peritoneal cavity of the rat were obtained at various times following in situ injection of a colloidal thorium dioxide preparation (Thorotrast). They were prepared for electron microscopy by aldehyde fixation, osmium tetroxide postfixation, and embedding in Epon. Thorotrast was rapidly taken up by mast cells through enhanced or newly elicited surface specializations. It was ...
متن کاملIdentification of a novel cell type in peripheral lymphoid organs of mice. IV. Identification and distribution in mouse spleen
White pulp nodules of mouse spleen contain a minor population of cells with morphologic features that are identical to those of dendritic cells, a cell type recently described in vitro. They have characteristic large, irregularly shaped nuclei with distinctive chromatin patterns and small nucleoli. The cytoplasm is extended in processes that contain relatively few organelles. These presumptive ...
متن کاملThe Fate of ' Thorotrast ' ( Thorium Dioxide ) injected into the Dorsal Lymph
Thorotrast (a colloidal suspension of thorium dioxide) injected into the dorsal lymph sac of the common frog, Rana temporaria, can be shown by radiological methods to pass through the anterior lymph hearts and so into the blood system. From the blood the thorotrast is removed, as in mammals, by cells of the reticulo-endothelial system and by macrophages, the sites of greatest activity being the...
متن کاملPrimary liver cell carcinoma 24 years after intravenous injection of thorotrast.
Thorium dioxide, when injected intravenously, is taken up by the reticulo-endothelial system and retained indefinitely, rendering the liver and spleen radio-opaque (Radt, 1930). A 25% colloidal solution of thorium dioxide was marketed under the name of "thorotrast" and used not only for hepatolienography but for retrograde pyelography, bronchography, and angiography generally, not to mention ot...
